Congratulations Akeyla!

Updated: Mar 22

We have great news to share with you! Yesterday afternoon, our Youth of the Year at the Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club, Akeyla Tanksley, was selected from the NorCal Youth of the Year event to represent at the statewide competition! This is a huge honor for both Akeyla and our community.

Akeyla competed alongside twelve candidates in a rigorous nine-hour day over Zoom at the DeLue Clubhouse. The judges were incredibly impressed with her story and her dedication to design and social equity in the Bay Area. We thank her coaches and mentors who have guided and helped her. We are so proud of Akeyla, and we look forward to the bright future that lays ahead of her.

We also thank YOU for being a supporter of the Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club and for watching the Youth of the Year event in January. Only with your support will we make the dreams of our impoverished youth come true. We will keep you posted on the next event, in the meantime, let’s wish Akeyla the best of luck as she continues her journey.

Akeyla is a high school sophomore and has been a Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club member for over six years. Akeyla's experience balancing her cultural and racial identity with social justice in her day-to-day life is apparent in her writing, her experience attending a predominantly-white private institution, and her participation in the Club's programs.

Akeyla received the title of Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club’s Youth of the Year at the 2021 virtual Youth of the Year Celebration on January 27. She will advance to the statewide event in April. If Akeyla is named the California Youth of the Year, she will contend for the Pacific Region Youth of the Year title in May. Six finalists will advance to Washington, D.C. in September 2021, for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year will receive a scholarship of $50,000.

Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Clubs’ highest honor, celebrating our most inspiring members. The Youth of the Year title is bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.
